Metuchen Council Campaigns
Transforming grassroots organizing into successful community campaigns

Sometimes the best opportunities are the ones you never planned for.

I was originally asked to design a campaign flyer for two Metuchen Borough Council candidates, Dorothy Rasmussen and Linda Koskoski. Shortly after beginning the project, their campaign manager unexpectedly resigned. Because of the organization, initiative, and design work I had already demonstrated, I was asked to step into the role.

I accepted the opportunity while driving to Philadelphia to photograph President Barack Obama during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Looking back, the moment felt like kismet.

It also became the beginning of three successful municipal campaigns and one of the most rewarding leadership experiences of my career.
The Challenge
Running a local campaign requires far more than good design.

Success depends on bringing together volunteers, candidates, messaging, events, fundraising, voter outreach, and community engagement into one coordinated effort.

Each election presented unique challenges, but every campaign shared the same goal: Create a clear, authentic voice that connected candidates with their community.

Learning to Lead
This campaign began with a single flyer.

It quickly evolved into managing every aspect of the campaign after the unexpected departure of the campaign manager.

Drawing upon my experience volunteering on Barack Obama's presidential campaigns, I coordinated volunteers, developed campaign branding, managed social media, designed literature, and helped guide the campaign to a successful election.

Campaign Two: Committee To Elect Leibfried And Pagel For Council

Building on Success
Having experienced one successful campaign, I approached the next election with greater confidence and a more refined strategy.

Working alongside a co-campaign manager, we divided responsibilities based on our strengths. I focused on campaign operations, branding, communications, photography, printed materials, and digital outreach while she coordinated events and logistics.

Together we transformed the campaign into something much larger than traditional literature. We created experiences.

Campaign Three: Busch, Rubin, Delia For Metuchen

Expanding the Vision

The addition of a mayoral campaign introduced new responsibilities and a broader audience.

Alongside campaign branding and communications, I helped coordinate fundraising events, donor outreach, candidate interviews, newspaper advertising, campaign meetings, and voter engagement.

The messaging evolved beyond individual candidates to communicate a broader vision for Metuchen's future.

Results

Across these election cycles, I helped develop recognizable campaign identities, organize volunteers, coordinate outreach efforts, and create communication materials that connected candidates with voters.

More importantly, these experiences taught me that leadership is rarely about doing one thing well.

It's about bringing people, ideas, and communication together around a common purpose.

Reflection

My first campaign taught me that leadership often arrives unexpectedly. What began as a simple graphic design project became an opportunity to guide teams, solve problems, and help candidates communicate with their community. Each campaign built upon the last, reinforcing a lesson that continues to shape my work today: thoughtful communication can bring people together and inspire meaningful action.
