Nokia Serialization System
Building a workflow where accuracy wasn't optional

Sometimes the most important design work isn't visible to the customer.

​When Nokia entrusted Ideal Jacobs with producing serialized MAC address labels, every label had to contain a globally unique identifier. A single duplicated value could create serious downstream issues for the customer, making accuracy, traceability, and process control absolutely essential.

Rather than relying on spreadsheets or manual tracking, I worked to develop a database-driven workflow that transformed a complex production challenge into a scalable, repeatable process.
The Business Challenge
Every network device requires a globally unique MAC address, making accuracy an absolute requirement.

Nokia supplied Ideal Jacobs with Organizationally Unique Identifier (OUI) blocks that could be expanded into millions of individual addresses. From those allocations, every label produced had to contain a valid, sequential, and previously unused value. As production volumes increased over time, relying on manual tracking was no longer a sustainable option.

The solution required much more than a labeling process. It demanded a scalable system that could validate incoming data, generate production-ready files, maintain complete historical records, and ensure that no MAC address was ever assigned twice. The workflow also needed to support multiple manufacturing locations while continuing to grow alongside one of Ideal Jacobs' largest customer programs.
What is a MAC address label?

A MAC address label is a printed tag on a device (like a router, printer, or smart TV) that displays its Media Access Control (MAC) address. This unique 12-character code identifies the hardware on a network and is used by routers to grant or restrict internet access.

Business Impact

Originally developed in 2020, the serialization workflow became the operational foundation for one of Ideal Jacobs' largest customer programs. By replacing manual tracking with a structured, database-driven process, the system improved reliability, strengthened traceability, eliminated duplicate MAC address assignments, and scaled alongside the continued growth of the program.

Reflection

Before this project, I thought of design primarily as something visual.

Developing the Nokia serialization system changed that perspective. I realized that the same principles behind good graphic design—clarity, organization, consistency, and thoughtful structure—also apply to building reliable systems. Today I approach technical challenges with the same mindset: understand the problem first, then create a solution that's intuitive, scalable, and built to last.
